A Proud Papa

Jake turned 6 years old today. It's so hard to believe that the little baby that we bundled up and brought home from the hospital in January 2001 is now a joyfully rambunctious kindergartener.

Jake seemed to have a fun day. He was thrilled to get his Moon Sand Castle set this morning before school and then he took cupcakes for the whole class.

After school, we opened the rest of his presents and headed to his party at the Fun Factory for tons of fun jumping and sliding on all of the giant inflatable items they have there. We survived breaking the pinata with no broken bones - a few near misses, but thankfully no one got hurt.

Jake then had a blast opening his presents and had his friends all gathered close by helping him unwrap all of his loot.

It was a really fun day, but the highlight was when we were driving back home. From the backseat, I heard my first-born belch a burp that would make any real father proud.

But my son, the prodigy, didn't stop with just your run-of-the-mill burp. No sir, he belched the entire tune of Happy Birthday. Let me repeat that, Jake literally belched in tune the entire song of "Happy Birthday to me".

I must admit that it brought a tear to my eye.

My little boy's not a baby anymore. He's on his way to becoming a man.

When he added a verse burping the classic "You look like a monkey and you smell like one too" coda, I knew it was a special moment in the relationship between a father and his son.

Jake may not be a baby anymore, but something tells me that the fun of being a father is just getting started -- much to Carol's dismay.

Happy birthday Jake! I love you VERY much!
